The International Civil Aviation Organisation, ICAO, has rated Nigeria’s aviation safety compliance at 91%.

The new rating follows a 14-day Coordinated Validation Mission conducted in Abuja to assess progress made since Nigeria recorded 70.12% compliance in 2023.

The audit, conducted under ICAO’s Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme, measures how effectively a country implements global aviation safety standards across key areas such as legislation, operations, airworthiness, accident investigation, and regulatory oversight.

At a session with journalists in Abuja, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, attributed the improved rating to the commitment of President Bola Tinubu to strengthening aviation safety standards.

Keyamo also commended aviation agencies for their role in implementing reforms and maintaining compliance with global best practices, describing the achievement as a collective effort across the sector.

A score of over 90% places Nigeria well above the global average and signals a high level of compliance and effective safety oversight, meaning the country’s aviation system meets most international best practices.

According to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, improvements include the deployment of safety management software, training of over 100 aviation inspectors, and certification of international airports.
