President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, and appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.

Egbetokun tendered his resignation letter citing pressing family considerations.

The President received the letter earlier on Monday and expressed profound appreciation for his decades of distinguished service to the country and the Nigeria Police Force.

In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu commended Egbetokun’s dedication, professionalism, and steadfast commitment to strengthening the country’s internal security architecture during his tenure.

Appointed in June 2023, Egbetokun was serving a four-year term scheduled to end in June 2027, in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act.

Considering the prevailing security challenges across the country and acting in accordance with extant laws, the President approved the appointment of AIG Tunji Disu in an acting capacity, pending further constitutional processes.

The President expressed confidence that Disu’s operational experience, leadership capacity, and professional depth would provide steady direction for the Nigeria Police Force at this critical period.

In compliance with the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu is expected to convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police.

President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening national security, enhancing institutional capacity, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and fully equipped to discharge its constitutional responsibilities.
