The Senate has confirmed the nomination of Joseph Tegbe as Minister of Power, with the minister-designate pledging to tackle Nigeria’s recurring grid collapses within his first three months in office.

Speaking during his screening, Tegbe said urgent reforms are needed to stabilise the national grid and improve electricity supply across the country.

He disclosed that the power sector is weighed down by debts estimated at about ₦6 trillion, warning that liquidity challenges are affecting operations across the electricity value chain.

Tegbe also called for stricter operational discipline, improved system management, and stronger protection of power infrastructure, describing vandalism as a national security threat.

During the screening, lawmakers blamed persistent electricity problems on entrenched interests within the sector, including what was described as a “generator cabal.”

Senate President Godswill Akpabio said Nigeria’s transmission network remains too weak to sustain available generation capacity without repeated grid collapses.
