It is the second day of the ongoing 114th session of the International Labour Conference holding in Geneva Switzerland, and the Committee on the Application of Standards, CAS has indicted the Nigerian government on its failure to implement Convention 98 on the rights to organise and collective bargaining among others.
General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation, ITUC African Regional Office, Joel Odigie explains what the indictment really means to the country’s image.
He said the report questioned the illegal takeover of the leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, by MC Oluomo with the backing of the state apparatus, among other infractions.
The Nigerian government in a swift reaction said the allegations are not far from the truth.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian government is billed to present its official documented responses on Friday.
