The Day one of the much anticipated nationwide protest against bad governance and hunger in Nigeria, has been generally peaceful and calm in Owerri, the Imo State capital, South East Nigeria.
Instead of protesters, the Owerri metropolis has rather experienced heavy rains from the early hours of Thursday, keeping residents indoors for the greater part of the day.
The roads and streets of Owerri have recorded very low vehicular movements, with major public places deserted by residents.
There are no business activities and Bank premises are under lock and keys.
ait.live crew in Owerri spotted several security operatives stationed at strategic positions to protect the areas and public assets from possible attacks.
Those who spoke, expressed concerns that any protest may escalate to violence, which according to them, will complicate the already bad economic situation in the country, and pose more frustrations on the citizens.
They called on protesters to give government the chance to address the economic challenges and reform the governance system in Nigeria.
On Wednesday, the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma had held a stakeholders meeting where he urged youths in the State to shun the proposed protest, as most of their agitations and demands were already being addressed by both the Federal and State governments.
