In an effort to combat drug abuse in society, a cross-section of the public and relevant government agencies in Imo State have taken the campaign to the streets of Owerri, calling for stronger public action and stiffer penalties against those involved in the illicit drug trade.
The road walk, organised by the Imo State Police Command and a rights organisation, Stand for Humanity, attracted a large number of participants who walked from the Dan Anyiam Stadium through major roads and streets of the state capital.
With placards and messages against drug abuse, the participants drew public attention to the dangers of substance abuse and its devastating consequences for individuals, families and society.
Representing the Commissioner of Police, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, called for collective action to tackle the growing menace.
The organisers of the public awareness campaign believe the road walk is a wake-up call for society to confront a problem that could jeopardise the future of an entire generation if left unchecked.
And as the participants bring the walk to an end, the message remains clear: the fight against drug abuse cannot be won through a single campaign.
