The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has extended the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration, CVR exercise by two weeks, giving eligible Nigerians another opportunity to register ahead of future elections.

INEC also announced the introduction of an online self-service voter registration platform for first-time voters, describing it as a major step towards making voter registration faster, more accessible and technology-driven.

The electoral umpire which made the announcement in a statement signed by its National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna explains that the decision followed a comprehensive review of the ongoing nationwide voter registration exercise and consultations with its state offices, political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.

The CVR exercise, which began on August 18, 2025, was initially scheduled to end on July 10, 2026. However, INEC said the deadline has now been extended to Sunday, July 26, 2026, to ensure that more eligible Nigerians are not denied the opportunity to participate in future polls.

The Commission further explains that the extension is expected to benefit thousands of citizens who have not been able to complete their registration due to work commitments, travel, technical challenges or late awareness of the exercise.

For many Nigerians who recently turned 18 or are registering for the first time, the additional two weeks could make the difference between participating in the next electoral cycle and being left out of the voters’ register.

Beyond extending the registration period, INEC says from July 8, 2026, eligible first-time voters will be able to initiate and complete their voter registration online through the Commission’s dedicated Continuous Voter Registration portal.

According to the Commission, the digital registration system incorporates multiple security measures, including identity verification, biometric validation and backend integrity checks aimed at protecting the credibility of the National Register of Voters.

INEC also expresses confidence that the digital platform would strengthen transparency while encouraging wider participation in Nigeria’s democratic process.
