INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that every eligible Nigerian can exercise their right to vote, as stakeholders call for stronger security measures for persons with disabilities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, stressed the need to move beyond discussions to practical action, assuring that the Commission would work with security agencies to ensure inclusive elections.

The position was supported by the Inspector General of police, Olatunji Disu who maintained that an election is only meaningful when every eligible citizen has the opportunity to vote.

Similarly, European Union Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot, said persons with disabilities have equal rights to participate in elections and must be protected from intimidation and other security threats, while Chairman of The Albino Foundation, Professor Vincent Anigbogu, emphasised the importance of protecting the lives and safety of all citizens during the electoral process

The engagement called for disability inclusion in security planning, personnel training, deployment and emergency response to ensure that no eligible voter is left behind.
