The Independent National Electoral Commission says it has used biometric technology to detect and remove multiple registrations from Nigeria’s voter register ahead of the next general election.
INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, says the register now contains more than 103 million voters, following the addition of over 10 million new voters since 2023.
Speaking at a National Orientation Agency engagement on grassroots mobilisation for the general election, Amupitan outlined the challenges of managing Nigeria’s large voting population.
He said Nigeria’s voting population exceeds the combined voting populations of several West African countries, including Liberia and Sierra Leone.
According to the INEC chairman, more than 10 million new voters were added during the continuous voter registration exercise, which was conducted in three phases.
He said the commission used its Automated Biometric Identification System to identify and remove multiple registrations and duplicate entries, bringing the total register to over 103 million voters.
Amupitan said the technology had helped to improve the credibility of the voter register.
