The president of the international Olympic committee, ioc Thomas Bach has declared Nigeria’s capital city Abuja as the official Olympic city for Africa.
Bach stated this during the commissioning of the headquarters of association of national Olympic committee for Africa, Anoca.
The ioc chief urged the federal government to continue to invest in the development of sports during his two-day visit to Nigeria
The visit began from the presidential villa where Bach an Olympian himself met with the vice president, Prof Yemi Osinbajo.
He also met with a couple of Nigerian Olympians at the Moshood Abiola stadium to receive firsthand information on their progress and challenges towards the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and the Dakar 2022 youth Olympics.
The fencing Olympic gold medalist at the Montreal 76 Olympic games in Canada emphasized the need to pass on the values of the Olympics to the next generation.
Bach who is the 9th president of the ioc then took a tour of the magnificient Moshood abiola stadium before visiting a school where he demonstrated some of the skills that made him an Olympic champion.
Officials from all 54 member countries of the ioc in Africa were in attendance. Others are Nigeria’s minister of women affairs Pauline taline, minister of the FCT, Mohammed bello and presidents of all sports federations in Nigeria.
