Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has congratulated the Amanyanabo-Elect of Opobo Kingdom, King Charles Douglas Macpepple Jaja, assuring him of his attendance at the upcoming coronation on September 26, 2026.
Jonathan made the commitment during a courtesy visit by the monarch and the Opobo Council of Alapu to his Yenagoa residence in Bayelsa State.
He praised the historic kingdom and its monarchy for their substantial contributions to Nigeria and the Niger Delta.
King Charles stated that the visit was intended to discuss regional interests and formally invite the former president as a foremost Ijaw leader, noting that an Opobo monarch could not be coronated without his presence.
Tracing its roots back to the 19th century, the Opobo monarchy was established as an independent commercial and political hub by King Jaja of Opobo following the Bonny civil conflict.
Formally recognized by Britain in 1873, King Jaja later clashed with imperial interests and was exiled in 1887.
King Charles Douglas Macpepple Jaja succeeds the late King Dandeson Douglas Jaja and will be formally coronated as King of Opobo Kingdom on September 26.
