Residents of Jos and surrounding communities have been assured of a steady supply of potable water on the completion of ongoing rehabilitation works at the Yakubu Gowon and Laminga Water Treatment Plants.
The assurance came as officials of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, alongside their Plateau State counterparts, inspected the progress of work at the treatment facilities in Jos.
Four months ago, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang awarded a ₦13.5 billion contract for the rehabilitation of the Yakubu Gowon and Laminga Water Treatment Plants.
A visit to the project sites shows that the contractor, China Geo-Engineering Corporation, is actively carrying out the rehabilitation, with work progressing according to schedule.
The Project Supervisor from the French Development Agency (AfD), which is financing the project, said construction is on track.
He expressed optimism that the timely delivery of heavy equipment currently being manufactured overseas would further accelerate the pace of work.
Speaking on behalf of the inspection team, the General Manager of the Jos Water Services Corporation said the rehabilitation project would significantly improve water production and distribution, bringing lasting relief to residents of the Greater Jos metropolis.
The Yakubu Gowon and Laminga Water Treatment Plant, commissioned in the 1970s, is currently operating at only about 30 percent of their installed capacity, limiting their ability to meet the growing potable water demands of the expanding city.
The ongoing rehabilitation is expected to restore the plants to optimal capacity and improve access to safe, potable water across the metropolis.
