The Kogi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately restore military checkpoints on Okene-Lokoja-Abuja Highway to stop the activities of blood thirsty criminals on the road.

In a statement signed by the Council Chairman, Adeiza Momoh Jimoh and Secretary, Ademu Seidu, the road has become a safe haven for criminals who have left tales of woes on the families of their victims.

The statement in particular noted that the Osara-Irepeni axis of the road has become notorious for the activities of the blood thirsty criminals.

The Chairman however said the fight should be taken to the criminals den in their various hideouts instead of waiting for them to strike before taking actions.

This follows the killing of 2 naval officers along the Lokoja- Okene Highway on Thursday. The incident, which happened around 6pm came 6 days after an Army Captain, GSM Abubakar was also reportedly killed on the same road, while his mother and wife were kidnapped.

The naval officers were traveling in a Toyota Sienna bus when they were stopped and the gunmen reportedly opened fire killing them on the spot.

The Kogi State Commissioner of Police commissioner, Ayuba Ede, who confirmed the incident to journalists said he has sent his men to the scene of the incident to ascertain the details of how and when it happened.

It could not be immediately ascertained where the Naval officers were coming from or heading to when the incident happened.

The team of detevtives dispatched by the State Police Commissioner was still being expected as at the time of filing this report.
