Nigeria's former President, Goodluck Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has hinted at a possible return to presidential politics ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying he would consult broadly before taking a final decision on whether to contest.

Jonathan made the remarks in Abuja on Thursday while addressing a group of supporters who visited him and urged him to join the presidential race.

The former Nigerian leader stressed the importance of patriotism, national unity and credible elections, warning that the country’s progress depends largely on peaceful democratic processes and active youth participation in governance.

According to him, young Nigerians must continue to champion peaceful elections and remain actively involved in the electoral process, particularly through voting and civic engagement.

Jonathan also reflected on his experience observing elections across several African countries, noting that leadership contests should not be treated lightly.

He maintained that the future of Nigeria must be guided by long-term national interest and policies capable of securing a better future for coming generations.

Although he stopped short of making a formal declaration, Jonathan’s comments are expected to intensify political discussions ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
