The Kaduna State Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, at Kaduna State University are disputing claims over staff welfare and the number of academics who have left the institution.
ASUU has issued a two-week ultimatum over the implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement, while the state government says it wants the dispute resolved through dialogue.
The disagreement centres on staff welfare, implementation of the 2025 FG-ASUU agreement and the number of academics leaving Kaduna State University.
The state government disputes ASUU’s claim that about 200 professors and other academic staff have left the university.
It says official records show that 59 academic staff left between January 2024 and August 2026, including two professors and two associate professors.
Their departures, it says, were through voluntary resignation or transfer of service.
The Principal Private Secretary to Governor Uba Sani, Professor Bello Ayuba, says the government has spent more than one billion naira settling outstanding personnel liabilities at the university.
He says other interventions have also been made to support staff welfare and academic activities.
But ASUU says some key concerns remain unresolved, despite acknowledging interventions by the state government.
The union says its two-week ultimatum remains in force.
But it also says it is willing to meet the state government to try to resolve the dispute and avoid industrial action.
With both sides indicating they are open to dialogue, attention now turns to whether an agreement can be reached before the ultimatum expires.
