The Kaduna State Government has launched a policy and guidelines for Traditional Birth Attendants, alongside a social Behaviour Change strategy for Nutrition Across Life Cycles.

The initiative is aimed at improving maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health and nutrition outcomes across the state.

The new policy provides a framework for regulating and engaging Traditional Birth Attendants, while strengthening their referral and linkage with the formal health system.

It recognises their continued role in communities, particularly among women who face barriers to accessing formal healthcare.

Kaduna State Commissioner for Health, Dr Umma Ahmed, says the policy will promote safer pregnancy and childbirth, early identification of danger signs, timely referral, and increased use of skilled health services

UNICEF Kaduna Chief of Field Office, Dr Garida Birukila, called for stronger community engagement on exclusive breastfeeding, immunisation, and healthy nutrition.

She also urged Traditional Birth Attendants to recognise their limitations and promptly refer pregnant women when complications arise.

The initiative is expected to strengthen community-based healthcare, promote safer deliveries, and improve nutrition outcomes for mothers, newborns, and children across Kaduna State.
