Nigeria has become the first country in Africa to develop a national strategy and action plan for the domestication of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) Kampala Declaration, a milestone hailed by stakeholders as a major step towards transforming the nation’s agrifood systems.

Speaking at the launch of the Agrifood System Strategy and Action Plan for the Domestication of the CAADP Kampala Declaration (2026–2035), Minister of Agriculture and food security, Abubakar Kyari described the initiative as a landmark achievement that places Nigeria at the forefront of implementing Africa’s agricultural transformation agenda.

Agriculture remains one of the strongest pillars of Nigeria’s economy. Beyond providing food for over 230 million people, the sector contributes significantly to employment generation, livelihood improvement, and overall national stability. However, challenges confronting the sector have continued to stall meaningful growth in the sector.

The Kampala Declaration provides a clear framework for coordinated action across agrifood systems, promoting investment, resilience, policy coherence, and mutual accountability. The minister of Agriculture and food security, Abubakar Kyari said it is time to demonstrate the political will, governance capacity, and the collective resolve to transform the country’s agrifood systems and deliver the goals of Kampala declaration to Nigerians.

To achieve the Agrifood System Strategy and Action Plan, the Working Group, therefore, is expected to provide an important institutional mechanism that would ensure that efforts are harmonised, and interventions produce measurable impacts.

For them, the success of the strategy will depend not only on government action but also on strong partnerships, effective coordination, and sustained collaboration among all stakeholders.
