Kano state has commenced a campaign against fake drugs and adulterated food items with the destruction of products worth hundreds of millions of naira.
This follows a disease outbreak traced to consumption of expired and substandard food items which resulted in the deaths of about ten persons, while about one thousand fell ill
The State governor Abdullahi Gamduje has promised a reward for anyone with useful information to aid authorities track those dealing in such products

Not less than ten people died of the disease caused by consumption of fake drugs, adulterated food and expired food items in kano state .
This triggered a joint investigation by the state government and the national agency for food drugs administration and control NAFDAC.
The outcome of the investigation revealed the proliferation of substandard consumer food items in the state
As a result, authorities in Kano through the office of the consumer Protection council began a massive search and confiscation of illicit, fake, and expired food items mostly in sabon gari market.
While destroying the goods worth over hundreds of millions of naira, the acting managing director of the kano consumer Protection council KCPC Baffa Dan’agundi said the council is having sleepless nights in order to unravel the dealers
In his remarks the health commissioner in kano state Aminu Tsanyawa said 10 deaths have been recorded so far of the disease caused by the expired food items and several others are still receiving treatment.
Kano State governor Abdullahi Ganduje said there will be a reward for who ever reports or gives vital information on any illegal production or sale of any illicit , fake or expired food items in the state .
The KCPC said it will not relax its actions until sanity is restored in markets of kano state
