No fewer than 1,900 butchers drawn from the 44 local government areas of Kano State, North-West Nigeria have received empowerment kits aimed at improving hygiene in meat processing, enhancing public health, and strengthening the informal sector.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony in Kano on Thursday, Governor Abba Yusuf said the initiative would improve the beneficiaries’ livelihoods, boost the state’s economy, and help reduce diseases associated with unhygienic meat processing.

Butchers play a vital role in Kano State’s food supply chain, processing meat daily for thousands of households, restaurants, and other food outlets. However, poor sanitary conditions in some slaughter and processing facilities have continued to pose public health risks, including food-borne diseases.

To address these challenges, the Kano State Government has empowered more than 1,900 butchers with important basic materials, under its economic empowerment programme, while also organising them into a structured meat-processing cluster within the state’s informal sector.

Governor Yusuf said the initiative is in line with his administration’s Kano First Agenda, which seeks to promote local enterprise, support small businesses, and expand economic opportunities for residents.

The Governor urged the beneficiaries to make productive use of the empowerment kits, improve hygiene standards in meat processing, and create opportunities for others within their communities.

This effort complements the state’s ongoing efforts to revive cottage industries and rehabilitate moribund industries to meet modern production standards and stimulate economic growth.
