Traditional Rulers in Northwest Nigeria comprising seven states have expressed concern about the continuous closure of schools in the region due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The concern was expressed at a zonal stakeholders meeting organised by the Federal Ministry of Education on how best to reopen schools in the region.
Some of the rulers said they are ready to cooperate with the Federal Government to ensure children are back in classes.
Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, represented by the Madakin Kano, Yusuf Nabahani, and other traditional rulers want necessary precautions to be taken to avoid another wave of the virus.
Kano State Commissioner for Education, Muhammad Kiru, said the state is not in competition with other states that have re-opened for learning, stressing that Kano will only comply with the Federal Government directives on safe reopening.

A representative of the United Nations Children Fund, UNICEF, Michael Banda, said the meeting is to reflect on how to bring children back to school as well as adequate records of all out of school children.
