The Labour Party in Rivers State has officially concluded its party primaries for all elective positions, adopting a consensus-based approach to select its candidates.
For the first time, the party is set to field candidates for every legislative seat in the upcoming general elections.
Party members turned out in large numbers to participate in the process, ultimately selecting their flag-bearers through a unanimous consensus.
Following the exercise, the chairman of the election committee, Retired Colonel Emeka Osuagwu, announced Chima Boms as the party’s consensus gubernatorial candidate.
Additionally, Beatrice Itubo, the former Rivers State Nigeria Labour Congress leader, emerged the senatorial candidate for Rivers East Senatorial District.
Candidates described the process leading to their emergence as peaceful and devoid of any dissenting voices.
Addressing the party’s decision to select a governorship candidate from the Ikwerre ethnic nationality, the state party chairman, Fredrick Nwojie, attributed the choice to a lack of interest from candidates from the riverine areas of the state.
He emphasized that the Labour Party is fully prepared to contest the polls and is determined to make its presence felt in the electoral outcome.
