Following the premiere of the film “Gangs of Lagos” produced and directed by Nigerian filmmaker Jadesola Osiberu on Friday April 8th 2023 in Lagos, a Lagos Chief has expressed reservations on the use of the traditionally revered ‘Eyo Masquerade ‘in the movie.

The Akinsiku of Lagos and the Olori Eyo, Chief Adebola Dosunmu, in a video he shared on his Instagram handle, said depicting the “Eyo Masquerade” in the movie is unacceptable for the tradition and heritage of the state.

He explained that the use of Eyo in a film is meant strictly for stage plays of deceased kings, chiefs and individuals who have contributed significantly to Lagos State.

Chief Dosunmu warned it is a taboo for anyone to bring out the “Eyo Masquerade” without certain rites, adding that there would be consequences for such action.
