President Bola Tinubu has mourned the death of the foremost Afenifere leader and elder statesman, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, who died at the age of 100.
In a condolence message, the President described Fasoranti as an icon of integrity, a principled leader and one of the last prominent figures in the progressive political tradition of the late Obafemi Awolowo.
Tinubu said the late elder statesman’s life was defined by integrity, discipline, selflessness and an unwavering commitment to the Yoruba people, as well as the unity and progress of Nigeria.
The President recalled that Fasoranti served as an educationist and school principal before becoming Commissioner for Finance in the old Western Region and later assuming leadership of Afenifere, the Yoruba socio-political organisation.
He noted that the late leader remained committed to true federalism and social justice, adding that he made immense contributions to Nigeria and risked his life in the struggle for democracy.
Tinubu said the country would greatly miss Fasoranti’s wisdom, moral authority and fatherly counsel, particularly at a time when the nation needed his guidance.
The President also recalled visiting Fasoranti at his residence in Akure in 2022 to inform him of his decision to contest the presidency.
According to Tinubu, the elder statesman prayed for his success and expressed confidence that he would become President during his lifetime, a prayer the President said was answered.
