Leadership crisis brewing in Accord Party

In Nigeria’s fast-moving political season, where defections and disputes often grab headlines, the leadership of Accord Party says it is staying focused, despite what it describes as distractions from an expelled member.

At a media conference in Abuja, the party’s National Chairman, Maxwell Mgbuden, pushed back against claims of a leadership crisis, telling journalists there is “no faction” within the party.

The clarification follows a protest earlier in the week at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, where the former presidential candidate, Christopher Imumolen reportedly presented himself as party chairman.

But for the Accord Party leadership, the incident is being framed not as a crisis, but as political theatre. Mgbuden described the protest as a “poorly scripted show,” insisting it does not reflect the reality within the party. He explains that Imumolen was expelled from the party in November 2024.

To support this position, the party referenced a series of court proceedings, including rulings by the FCT High Court, which it says dismissed any claims to leadership by the former candidate.

Mgbuden emphasised that the party’s energy would be directed toward building its base and preparing candidates, while pointing to growing membership and its political strength in Osun State, where Governor Ademola Adeleke is cited as a key figure attracting supporters.
