Electricity is slowly being restored across many parts of Nigeria, following a nationwide blackout believed to have been caused by yet another collapse of the national power grid.

Officials in the electricity sector say the latest collapse was caused by the Omotosho-Ikeja West 330kV transmission line tripping off. However, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says it has successfully restored the line and normalized power supply to the affected areas.

According to the TCN, the line tripped off at about 11:30 on Wednesday at the Omotosho end, resulting in a cascaded outage that impacted the Lagos, Abuja, and Osogbo axis.

TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah explained that the Benin-Egbin 330kV line was on a scheduled outage for mechanical line tracing at the time it tripped off.

She commended the TCN’s team for their prompt response, which ensured the quick restoration of the line.

The TCN reiterated its commitment to providing efficient and reliable electricity transmission services to Nigerians.

The company says it will continue to implement measures to enhance the stability of the national grid, ensuring that power outages are minimized and quickly resolved.

It is the second time Nigeria’s power grid has collapsed since the beginning of 2025. In 2024 it collapsed 12 times and has collapsed over 100 times in the past ten years
