Residents of Bassa community in Bassa Local Government Area of Kogi State, North-Central Nigeria have been cut off from other parts of the state following Thursday night’s downpour which washed away the only wooden bridge connecting it to adjoining communities.

Socio-economic activities have been brought to a halt by this development, with the residents calling on both the federal and statel governments to come to their rescue by constructing the abandoned bridge after it was flagged off eight years ago.

Bassa Local Government is an agrarian area known for the cultivation of different food and cash crops with its local market in Sheria, attracting businessmen and women from different parts of Nigeria on a weekly basis.

The major concern of the people who feel neglected by government right now is the economic losses being incurred since the bridge was washed away.

Meanwhile, some priests who have stood with Bassa people in their days of crises want influential members of the area to support their people who are suffering.

At the moment, Kpanche, Akakana, kpokudu, Ikende, Wussa and Paruwa communities may find it difficult to cross over to Oguma, the local government headquarters, which is even a shadow of itself due to inactivity and near absence of government presence.
