A 29-year-old man has voluntarily renounced his membership of a cult group and surrendered a Beretta pistol to security authorities in Edo State, South-South Nigeria in what officials have described as a breakthrough in the state’s anti-cultism campaign.
The Zonal Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, Joel Aidamebor, said the development followed a security operation in Esan West Local Government Area after suspicious activities were reported to security agencies. He said the Acting Chairman of the Council, Blessing Ebhodaghe, later met with the youths and urged them to abandon cultism and other criminal activities. Moved by the appeal, one of the young men voluntarily surrendered a Beretta pistol, which was subsequently handed over to the police.

The young man, who identified himself as an aspiring musician, said he chose to leave cultism after reflecting on the Chairman’s message. He explained that he surrendered the firearm because he did not want it used for criminal purposes.
The Edo State Security Corps commended his decision and called on other cult members to embrace lawful living, while reaffirming the state government’s commitment to tackling cultism, kidnapping and other violent crimes.
