The Democrats in the United States have won the Senate and the House of Representatives, taking control of Congress for the rest of Donald Trump’s presidency.
This is a historic rout of the Republican Party – and a scale of victory most Democrats wouldn’t have dreamt of even a few months ago.
Trump tells Fox News that the Democrats “did a good job”, adding: “I’m a little surprised”
In the Senate race, Democrats picked up a string of surprise victories in Republican strongholds, including Texas, Ohio, and Kansas – which last elected a Democrat almost 100 years ago.
With control of Congress, the Democrats will be able to frustrate President Trump’s plans for the next two years – and could even try to impeach him for a third time.
