Against concerns that voter apathy could affect the 2027 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC says early signs from the ongoing continuous voter registration, CVR exercise suggest that more people may participate in the polls.

Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC in Enugu State, Chukwuemeka Chukwu, expressed the optimism while updating journalists on the Continuous Voter Registration exercise in the state.

For the electoral body, the number of new voters recorded so far in phases one and two of the exercise paints a different picture from fears that many Nigerians are losing interest in the democratic process.

According to the Commission, a total of 67,751 new voters have so far been registered in Enugu State.

Briefing journalists on Monday, Dr. Chukwu, says the figures point to growing public interest, especially among first-time voters and young people preparing ahead of the 2027 elections.

INEC is now calling on eligible residents who are yet to register to make use of the current registration window, which opens this Monday.

The Commission also reassures residents of its readiness to conduct a credible and inclusive electoral process ahead of the June 20, 2026 by-election for the Enugu North Senatorial District.
