A Nigerian Air Force helicopter has made a precautionary landing on farmland in Makurdi, Benue State, after providing close air support to ground forces during an operation against suspected kidnappers in Ogbadigbo Local Government Area.
The incident occurred at Utur Tse-Igboji in Bar Council Ward, along the Welfare Quarters–Mopol 13 Ring Road.
The Nigerian Air Force says the helicopter was involved in an operation targeting suspected kidnappers near the Enugu–Benue boundary, where its close air support helped disrupt the activities of the suspects and aided the advance of ground forces.
The Air Force says that after successfully completing the mission, the pilot exercised professional discretion by making a precautionary landing about ten nautical miles from the airfield, in accordance with established operational and safety procedures following combat missions.
Eyewitnesses, however, reported that the helicopter appeared to have developed a technical fault before landing on the farmland.
The Nigerian Air Force says the helicopter has since returned to base.
The incident comes two days after the Nigerian Air Force lost 25 personnel in a fatal aircraft crash in Ondo State.
The Air Force says the Benue operation demonstrates its continued efforts to sustain pressure on criminal elements through coordinated air and ground operations.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting ground forces and protecting communities affected by insecurity across the country.
