Academic activities at Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), have been disrupted following an indefinite strike declared by lecturers under the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), NSUK Branch.
The Chairman of ASUU-NSUK, Dr Zubairu Loko, disclosed this in a telephone interview with AIT, saying the strike was total and comprehensive.
According to Loko, the industrial action followed the failure of the university authorities and the Nasarawa State Government to address several outstanding welfare concerns affecting academic staff.
He said lecturers were being owed more than three billion naira in arrears arising from unpaid Earned Academic Allowance, the implementation of the minimum wage, and the recently approved salary increment for academic staff of universities by the Federal Government.
The ASUU chairman said the union had held several meetings with the university management, Governing council and the state government to seek the payment of the outstanding entitlements.
He said the meetings had failed to produce any positive outcome, leaving the lecturers with no option but to withdraw their services.
Dr Loko stressed that members will boycott their duty posts until their demands are addressed.
He added that the strike would affect all academic responsibilities, including the supervision of thesis and research work.
