President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Olumide Akpata welcomes the appointment of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as the 18th Chief Justice of Nigeria, following the resignation of Justice Tanko Mohammad on Monday.
Akpata pledged readiness of the Association to work with Justice Ariwoola in addressing the ills that have continued to plague not just the judiciary, but the entire legal profession.
The NBA President who issued a statement to this effect on Monday, prayed for the speedy recovery and peaceful retirement of Justice Tanko Muhammad.
While thanking him for his lengthy service to the country, Akpata said it is impossible to consider Justice Tanko’s retirement as a result of the revolt by 14 justices of the Supreme court, in a leaked memo jointly signed, where they accused him of running the court as his personal property and denying other Justices their allowances.
Akpata stated that there is therefore an urgent need to reform the judiciary and restore the almost dissipated confidence Nigerians have in the Judiciary as it can be said that the public confidence in the legal profession is at an all-time-low.
