Nigeria’s broadcast regulator, the National Broadcasting Commission, has issued a formal notice over rising breaches of the 6th Edition of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code across news, current affairs and political programmes.

The Commission cites violations of key provisions, including:

Section 1.10.3 – presenters must not express personal opinions as fact

Sections 3.3.1(b) & 3.4.1(b) – all sides must be fairly and equitably presented

Section 5.3.3(b) prohibition of hate speech and divisive content

NBC also flags misuse of broadcast platforms by political actors, referencing sections that prohibit incitement, disorder, and content that threatens national unity.

Anchors who intimidate guests, deny opposing views, or compromise neutrality now risk Class B sanctions.

The Commission stresses that editorial responsibility rests solely with broadcasters—even during live programmes.

With 2027 elections approaching, NBC insists compliance is mandatory, warning that inflammatory or unverified content will attract sanctions.
