Cue: For many young Nigerians, the dream of flying helicopters in the oil and gas industry often seems far beyond reach. But for 10 fortunate trainees, that dream is now taking off through a pilot development programme sponsored by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, Chevron Nigeria Limited and Bristow Helicopters Nigeria Limited.

The initiative, unveiled in Lagos, is designed to equip the beneficiaries with world-class aviation skills and prepare them for careers in one of the most specialised sectors supporting offshore oil and gas operations. The trainees will undergo 18 months of intensive classroom learning, ground training and practical flight operations.

Speaking at the kick-off ceremony, the Executive Secretary of NCDMB, Felix Omatsola Ogbe, represented by the Director, Capacity Building Directorate, Abayomi Bamidele, described the programme as a strategic investment in Nigerian talent and a major step towards building local capacity in critical areas of the oil and gas industry.

He says the goal is not only to produce licensed pilots but also professionals who embody excellence, discipline and leadership.

The Managing Director of Bristow Helicopters Nigeria Limited, Capt. Oladapo Oyeleke, described the programme as another milestone in the company’s long history of aviation training and excellence.

For one of the beneficiaries, Itorobong Inyang, the opportunity represents more than career advancement. She says her selection challenges long-held stereotypes about women in aviation and proves that determination and merit can open doors in traditionally male-dominated fields.

The trainees will begin their journey in South Africa, where they will acquire internationally recognised pilot qualifications before advancing to specialised helicopter training.
