Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara says achieving sustainable development within the Niger Delta requires sound and strong legal framework that would ensure adherence to resolutions, enforcement and implementation of laws.

The Governor stated this during the 2926 NDDC Law and Development Summit in Port Harcourt, with the theme “the role of law in driving sustainable development in the Niger Delta.”

The NDDC Law and Development Summit, with stakeholders drawn from the bar, the bench, and development experts was first held in 2008, eight years after the interventionist agency was established.

Eighteen years later, the NDDC is seeking input from legal practitioners, jurists and development experts, to formulate and promote laws that would help to address the region’s development challenges, mostly created by the oil and gas exploration, in order to drive sustainable development of the Niger delta region.

Governor Fubara who was represented by his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu commended the NDDC for engaging experts to strengthen laws that would help in achieving sustainable development of Niger Delta region.

The summit which featured panel discussion is expected to throw up possible suggestions that would guide future sustainable development plans.
