The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has dismantled an alleged Nigerian-Mexican drug cartel operating a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory capable of producing the drug in commercial quantities in Enugu State.
Two alleged kingpins, 45-year-old Chukwu Obumneme Christopher, also known as Brown, and 60-year-old Chukwu Georginus Monday, also known as George, have been arrested and arraigned before the Federal High Court in Enugu.
NDLEA says the two Nigerians allegedly operated the laboratory in partnership with Rodriguez Villanueva, an alleged member of a Mexican drug cartel based in Mexico City, who remains at large.
The clandestine laboratory was uncovered in Eziama community in Obeagu, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, following several months of intelligence gathering and surveillance by the NDLEA.
Investigations by the Agency’s Special Operations Unit revealed what the NDLEA describes as a sophisticated transnational drug operation involving Nigerian suspects and a Mexican cartel member.
Between December 1 and 4, 2025, NDLEA operatives tracked the movements of Chukwu Obumneme Christopher, also known as Brown, between Lagos, Enugu and Anambra states.
The surveillance eventually led operatives to a compound in Obeagu, where they uncovered the clandestine laboratory.
NDLEA says the facility, fitted with improvised reactors and distillation apparatus, was capable of producing methamphetamine in commercial quantities and mirrored similar clandestine laboratories recently dismantled in Ogun, Oyo and Ebonyi states.

A search of the premises led to the recovery of large quantities of precursor chemicals.
They include 690 litres of methylamine, 1,000 litres of isopropyl alcohol, 300 litres of hydrochloric acid, 290 litres of toluene, 290 litres of acetone and 400 litres of liquid sodium hydroxide.
Operatives also recovered 125 kilograms of N-phenylacetamide, 414 kilograms of lead acetate and 769.6 kilograms of tartaric acid, among other controlled substances.
According to the NDLEA, the quantity and combination of the chemicals are consistent with a high-potency, P2P-based methamphetamine manufacturing operation.
A related search of the family residence of Chukwu Georginus Monday, also known as George, yielded eight large fuel tanks, four commercial gas burners, four dehydrators and 11 kilograms of ephedrine.
The Agency says the additional equipment and chemicals further indicate the scale of the alleged cartel’s methamphetamine production operation.
Christopher and Monday have now been arraigned before Justice Mabel Taiye Segun-Bello of the Federal High Court, Enugu Judicial Division.
They face a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, organisation, management and financing of a drug trafficking organisation, as well as unlawful possession of precursor chemicals used in methamphetamine production, contrary to the NDLEA Act.
Following their pleas, Justice Segun-Bello scheduled their trial for October 21, 2026, after the NDLEA applied for an accelerated hearing.
Three other suspects named in the charge remain at large.
They are Uchenna, also known as Uche; Celestine Ikemefuna Iwuchukwu; and Rodriguez Villanueva, whom the NDLEA identifies as a member of a Mexican drug cartel.
Chairman and Chief Executive of the NDLEA, retired Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa, says the Agency will continue efforts to track down every fleeing suspect linked to the alleged cartel and bring them before the law.
Marwa commended officers involved in the operation for what he described as their professionalism and persistence in dismantling another international drug syndicate.
He says the discovery of the Enugu laboratory demonstrates the growing challenge posed by transnational drug networks and insists Nigeria will not be allowed to become a haven for international drug cartels.
The NDLEA Chairman says intelligence-driven operations and international partnerships will continue to be deployed against loopholes exploited by both local and foreign drug traffickers.
He also directed NDLEA personnel to sustain enforcement operations against illicit drug production and trafficking across the country.
