The National Economic Council has endorsed a ninety-day economic action plan aimed at easing living costs, improving food affordability and attracting investment.

The council also backed joint federal-state financing to expand compressed natural gas and electric vehicle transport, with savings expected to translate into lower fares.

The decisions were reached at the council’s 161st meeting, chaired virtually by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Presenting the action plan, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, outlined five priorities.

These are food affordability, tax harmonisation, completion of high-impact projects, removal of investment bottlenecks and targeted support for households.

Shettima urged governors to ensure that President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms improved living conditions, particularly through jobs, affordable transport and accessible healthcare.

He said the success of the reforms must be measured by their effect on Nigerians’ daily lives.

The council also approved a national dashboard to track projects and improve transparency in the use of public funds, including proceeds from fuel subsidy removal.

On transportation, it agreed to establish a joint financing framework between federal and state governments to accelerate the deployment of compressed natural gas and electric vehicles.

The council said the resulting savings should be reflected in lower fares for commuters.

The Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, also briefed members on the reported Ebola case in the Federal Capital Territory.

He assured the council of Nigeria’s capacity to contain the situation.

The council urged states to strengthen public health preparedness and polio eradication efforts.

It also endorsed closer federal-state cooperation to develop the livestock sector.

Members stressed that coordinated implementation across all tiers of government would be essential to achieving the plan’s objectives.
