The newly elected President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, has called on the Federal Government to strengthen security in schools across the country and prioritise the welfare of Nigerian students.A
Afeez made the call shortly after emerging victorious at the 2026 NANS National Convention held at the Old Parade Ground in Abuja.
The student leader, who is from Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, urged governments at all levels to ensure adequate protection of educational institutions against attacks by bandits and the abduction of students.
He also stressed the need for policies and programmes that would improve the welfare and learning conditions of students in tertiary institutions nationwide.
Afeez was elected NANS President after polling 349 votes to defeat his closest rival, Aminu Haruna Maipanpo, who secured 12 votes, while Odumosu Olumide received 10 votes.
A former Senate President of NANS, Afeez emerged winner in a keenly contested election involving five presidential candidates, succeeding the outgoing President, Olushola Oladoja.
The convention, which was conducted under tight security with the presence of Police officers and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), was described by participants as one of the most peaceful conventions in the history of the association.
In his remarks, the outgoing President, Oladoja, described the successful conduct of the election as one of the proudest moments of his administration.
Earlier, Chairman of the Independent Convention Planning Committee (ICPC), Omotayo Oladele Samuel, disclosed during the accreditation exercise held at Kapital Club, Asokoro, that over 300 delegates participated in the convention.
According to him, the delegates included Student Union Government presidents, Senate presidents, and other student leaders from tertiary institutions across the country.
