The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, Tony Ojukwu has called on the Federal Government to endorse safe school declarations in various states of the country.

Ojukwu said this at the opening of the multi-stakeholder forum on safe schools declaration, which took place in Abuja on Tuesday.

The incessant attack on schools which is now a target for terrorists and other criminally-minded elements in the country necessitated the multi-stakeholders forum.

The safe school declaration, which is a commitment to protect education during armed conflict, informed the forum organised by the National Human Rights Commission in collaboration with the international community to explore ways to improve on the strategies to ensure safe education in Nigerian schools.

NHRC and it’s partners both agreed that endorsing the safe school declarations in all states of the federation will help reduce the negative impact of insurgency on education.

Nigerians are still aware that there are still children that have been in the captivity of other abductors for over 7 years which includes
the Chibok girls abduction.

The forum is expected to grant access to justice and prosecution of attacks on education and also serve as a support system for survivors of the attacks.
