The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, says Nigeria’s development must be driven by respect for human rights, equality and justice, with the impact of government reforms measured by improvements in the lives and dignity of citizens.

The Commission made the call in a statement by its Executive Secretary, Chief Tony Ojukwu, to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

Ojukwu said economic growth alone should not be the measure of successful reforms, stressing that development must also translate into improved living conditions and greater protection for ordinary Nigerians.

He urged governments at all levels to strengthen social protection and improve access to basic services, particularly for vulnerable and disadvantaged citizens.

The NHRC Executive Secretary also called on security agencies to uphold professionalism and accountability in the discharge of their duties, stressing that efforts to protect national security must not undermine fundamental human rights.

On access to justice, Ojukwu called for a more effective justice system that guarantees equal treatment and protection, particularly for the poor, women, children, persons with disabilities and internally displaced persons.

He also urged public institutions to strengthen transparency, accountability and responsive governance, while calling on Nigerians to promote peaceful coexistence and respect the rights of others.

Ojukwu reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to working with government, civil society organisations, the media and other stakeholders to promote human rights and strengthen accountability across the country.
