The Nigerian Senate has called on the president and chairman of ECOWAS, Bola Tinubu, to explore political and diplomatic options in resolving the political impasse in the Niger Republic, rather than military action, to return the country to democratic leadership.

This is as the Senate condemned in totality the military coup in the Republic of Niger, and resolved to further engage with the president and chairman of ECOWAS, on how best to resolve the issues.

The resolution of the upper chamber follows the recommendations adopted after an executive session that lasted for more than two hours.

The upper chamber stated that it recognises the fact that President Tinubu, according to his correspondence, has not asked for the approval of the parliament to go to war, as erroneously suggested in some quarters.

Rather, the president has expressed a wish to respectfully solicit the support of the National Assembly in the successful implementation of the ECOWAS Resolutions, as outlined in the said communiqué.

The Senate also resolved to further engage President Tinubu on behalf of the National Assembly, on how best to resolve the issue, given the existing cordial relationship between Nigerians and Nigeriens.

The lawmakers commend President Tinubu and other heads of state and governments of ECOWAS for their prompt response, and positions taken on the unfortunate development in the Niger Republic.

The Senate also applauded the ECOWAS parliament for rising to condemn the coup.
