About 37,000 people living with HIV in Niger state are currently receiving treatment, as the government moves to reduce its dependence on donor funding for the HIV response.

The state has launched its 2025–2027 Strategic Plan, with a commitment to increase domestic funding for testing, treatment and other interventions.

About 37,000 people living with HIV are currently on treatment in Niger State.

But health authorities say there are others who may not yet know their status.

As international donor funding declines, the state is looking at how to sustain the response with more of its own resources.

The 2025–2027 State Strategic Plan is intended to move Niger State towards a more government-led and domestically financed HIV response.

The state government says this will require increased budgetary allocations to sustain testing, treatment and prevention programmes.

But funding is only one part of the challenge.

Health authorities want more people to know their HIV status, while ensuring those who test positive have access to treatment.

The aim is to reduce new infections and bring down the prevalence of the virus in the state.

Stakeholders involved in the HIV response say implementing the plan will require sustained government funding and cooperation among health authorities, communities and other partners.

For Niger State, the challenge now is turning the commitments in the strategic plan into sustained testing, treatment and prevention.
