Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi, says the promises of the Federal Government are yet to reflect the realities facing many Nigerians.
In a broadcast marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, Obi cited poverty, insecurity, hunger, unemployment and poor health outcomes as evidence of what he described as a widening gap between government promises and the living conditions of citizens.
Obi said the Independence Anniversary should provide an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s direction and whether it still reflects the aspirations that accompanied independence.
He argued that Nigeria’s greatest challenge is not a lack of human or natural resources, but the inability to translate those resources into improvements in human development, security and economic opportunities.
The former Anambra State Governor, however, expressed optimism that the country can overcome its challenges through what he described as purposeful leadership, accountable governance and better management of national resources.
His remarks come as President Bola Tinubu, in his Independence Day address, said Nigeria had reached a turning point after three years of economic reforms and that the government’s priority is now to reduce the cost of living and deliver what he described as shared prosperity.
