The Federal Government is set to adopt 112 as Nigeria’s single national emergency number. The plan was finalized after a meeting between Vice President Kashim Shettima and a delegation from the Nigerian Communications Commission at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The decision followed NEC’s approval of 112 as the national emergency number, wherein a multi-agency Committee led by the Office of the Vice President and the NCC will drive implementation.
Vice President Shettima directed the NCC to develop a roadmap and work with NEMA to align with global best practices.
NCC Board Chairman, Chief Idris Olorunnimbe, said about 35 Emergency Communications Centres have already been set up nationwide. He called on State Governors to support and maintain the centres, and urged all emergency agencies to fully buy into the initiative for it to succeed.
The Vice President assured that funding will be mobilized through NEC and the private sector. Officials have expressed confidence that the Code 112 will provide Nigerians with one toll-free number for Police, Medical, F ire and other emergency services across the nation.
