Nigeria Editors Reject Government’s Move to Regulate Social Media
The All Nigeria editors’ conference holding in Sokoto Thursday rejected attempts to regulate the social media insisting that existing laws make enough provisions to deal with hate speech.
Speaking at the conference, the Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal said it is dangerous and undemocratic to impose death penalty on offenders.
The conference with a theme ‘a distressed media; impact on government, governance and the society is ordinarily set to discuss media business, declining revenues prospects and challenges,
But speaker after speaker made references to the bill on regulation of social media and hate speech.
Former governor of Ogun state Olusegun Osoba implored the editors to fight against the move.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed was slated to be the host minister of the conference but was absent without any apologies or representation.
