As Nigeria continues to seek lasting solutions to end insecurity, developing and deploying nanotechnology in military warfare will not only help win the war against terrorism but also sustain the gains.

This was the submission of an academic don and professor of chemical engineering, Abdulkareem Saka, during the 135th inaugural lecture of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State, North-Central Nigeria.

The lecture is titled “Rave of Small but Mighty Nanomaterials in 21st Century Engineering Innovation: Where Are We as a Country?”

According to Professor Saka, Nanotechnology is the science and technology of very small objects and phenomena on the scale of a few to about 100 nanometers, involving individual atoms, molecules, single electrons, and single photons.

Adequate development and deployment of nanotechnology in military warfare will go a long way toward fighting insecurity and minimising losses for security agencies.

The academic don also urged the government to do more with nanotechnology in the field of medicine, renewable energy, water treatment, and agriculture to make society a better place for all.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Faruk Kuta, commended the inaugural lecturer for demonstrating the capacity of researchers in the University to develop indigenous solutions to national challenges.

Another major takeaway of the lecture was the development of a locally made prosthetic foot using carbon nanotube-reinforced natural rubber composites which Professor Saka explained that the innovation was aimed at addressing the high cost, limited durability and accessibility challenges associated with imported artificial limbs in Nigeria.

He disclosed that the prosthetic foot, developed by his research team, had undergone testing and evaluation and was successfully tested on Hamisu Yusuf from Sokoto State at the Leprosy Mission Hospital, Minna.

He described the innovation as a Nigerian solution designed to provide affordable, durable and comfortable artificial limbs for Nigerian amputees.
