According to Numbeo’s 2026 Crime Index, Nigeria ranks 13th globally, placing it among countries with the highest perceived crime levels.
The news doesn’t get better on the social front. The 2026 World Happiness Report shows Nigeria has slipped further down the rankings, hitting a four-year low
With a crime index score of 66.2, Nigeria ranks among the most crime-affected nations globally and within Africa.
The high crime perception is driven by rising cases of kidnapping and armed robbery, ongoing insurgency and banditry, urban crime in major cities, and increasing cybercrime activities. Many Nigerians also reported concerns about safety, particularly at night.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s position in the World Happiness Report continues to decline. The country now ranks 106th out of 147 countries in 2026, down from 105th in 2025 and 102nd in 2024.
The report measures well-being, using factors such as income, social support, life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption.
Nigeria’s drop is linked to economic hardship, rising inflation, youth unemployment, governance challenges, and persistent security issues.
While countries like Finland, Denmark, and Iceland top the happiness rankings, others such as Costa Rica and Mexico show that strong social ties and community life also play a key role in well-being.
Overall, Nigeria’s performance in both reports highlights growing concerns about public safety and the impact of economic and social pressures on quality of life.
