Nigeria is once again occupying a prominent front-row position at the United Nations General Assembly, as world leaders converge in New York for the high-level segment of the 81st session.
The Nigerian delegation, led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, is visibly seated among the front rows of the General Assembly Hall as the opening of the high-level debate got underway.
The positioning is more than a matter of seating.
Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, had explained that the country would retain its designated front-row position even with Vice President Shettima representing President Bola Tinubu.
For Nigeria, the prominent position provides visibility at a gathering where countries seek to project their interests, engage world leaders and advance diplomatic priorities.
It also comes at a time Nigeria is pushing for greater representation and reform of global institutions, including its longstanding call for a permanent seat for Africa on the United Nations Security Council.
Vice President Shettima, who is representing President Tinubu, is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement and participate in high-level diplomatic engagements during the General Assembly.
The Vice President has said Nigeria’s participation will be guided by the country’s national interest, commitment to multilateralism and the need for global institutions to better reflect contemporary economic and demographic realities.
Seated alongside Shettima is Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of Defence General Christopher Musa ,while Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, is also playing a key role in coordinating the country’s engagements.
The prominence of Nigeria’s delegation is particularly notable on a day United States President Donald Trump addresses the General Assembly, with the international community focused on major global challenges, including conflicts, security, economic pressures and the future of multilateral cooperation.
For Nigeria, therefore, the front-row presence offers a visible platform from which to engage other countries, strengthen bilateral relationships and draw attention to issues that affect Nigeria, Africa and the developing world.
