The Nigerian Army has emphasised that its operations must comply with the Constitution, extant laws, international legal obligations and established rules of engagement.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, stated this at the 2026 Nigerian Army School of Legal Services Training Workshop in Zaria, Kaduna State.
The 2026 Nigerian Army School of Legal Services Training Workshop is designed to strengthen the professional competence and legal capacity of military personnel and legal practitioners.
The workshop, themed “Combating Insecurity in Nigeria: The Rule of Law in Ensuring Operational Efficiency,” seeks to ensure that military objectives are achieved within the bounds of the law, particularly in the face of the complex security threats confronting the country.
The Chief of Army Staff, who was represented by the Commandant, Nigerian Army School of Infantry, Major General Muhammad Inuwa, described legal officers as indispensable partners in operational planning, execution and decision-making.
The Army Chief noted that the Nigerian Army’s objective of becoming a more professional, adaptive, combat-ready and resilient force operating within a joint and multi-agency environment must be supported by a strong legal institution.
Discussions at the workshop also focused on the constitutional and statutory frameworks governing the conduct of military operations, as well as the place of international humanitarian law and human rights compliance in military operations.
The workshop is expected to strengthen operational effectiveness, military discipline and public confidence in the Nigerian Army.
