Nigerians Mark 6th Anniversary Of #ENDSARS Protest In Lagos

Six years ago, thousands of young Nigerians took to the streets to demand an end to police brutality under the #EndSARS movement.

What began as a protest against the Special Anti-Robbery Squad soon became a nationwide call for accountability, good governance, and respect for human rights.

Six years later, questions remain about the impact of the protests and what they mean for Nigerian society.

In October 2020, young Nigerians united to demand an end to police harassment, unlawful arrests, extortion, and other alleged abuses associated with SARS.

The protests reached a defining moment on October 20, following the disputed shooting of protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos. The incident sparked national outrage and international condemnation, leaving a lasting mark on Nigeria’s history.

Six years later, although SARS has been disbanded and new police reform initiatives introduced, concerns about police accountability, human rights violations, and justice for victims persist.

For Nigerians, the significance of #EndSARS goes beyond police reform. It demonstrated the power of youth mobilisation, the importance of peaceful protest, and the need for government institutions to earn public trust.

The movement also exposed the growing disconnect between citizens and those entrusted with protecting them.

Six years on, the challenge remains translating the demands of the protesters into meaningful reforms, transparent investigations, and lasting respect for fundamental rights.

As Nigeria marks the sixth anniversary of EndSARS, for many Nigerians, the legacy of the movement will depend not on annual commemorations alone, but on whether citizens feel safer, victims receive justice, and public institutions become more accountable.
